If you’re interested in moving to the UK, you’ll need to follow the new points-based immigration system that has been developed. This system is designed to help students, skilled workers, and specialists come to the UK to work and it can be a little complicated.

In order to become eligible to apply for immigration, you need to have at least 70 points.

How do you get the points you need in order to immigrate? Let’s take a look.

What Earns You Points

There are a number of characteristics for a job that will give you points, but they need to add up to 70 in order to allow you to apply. Your eligibility will depend on the jobs you’re applying for.

Employment

You’ll need to have a job offer before you can apply for immigration. This may be difficult to manage ahead of time but if you can get it set up, then you will be in an excellent position for applying. You also get points depending on the type of job you are invited to apply for.

Employers can become approved sponsors and if you receive a job offer from one of these, you automatically receive 20 points. You’ll get another 20 points if the job is at an appropriate skill level for you and yet another 20 points if it is a job in a shortage occupation.

Salaries

The salary you’re being offered will affect your points status. If you are being offered anything between  £20,480 (minimum) – £23,039, you receive no points. A salary of £23,040 – £25,599 will provide you with 10 points and anything over £25,600 gives you 20 points.

Education

Your education also matters, so you will gain higher points for higher levels of education. Speaking English at the required level for the position will give you 10 points and ensures you’ll be able to communicate well in your job.

If you’ve completed a PhD in a subject that is relevant to the job being offered, you get 10 points. However, if you have a PhD in a STEM subject that is relevant, you receive 20 points. It’s a good idea to consider this if you are still studying.
